Emma Shubin
Flutist, Dalcroze, and Suzuki educator, Emma Shubin has been joyfully making music since the age of six. She plays piccolo with the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, and travels nationally and internationally making music in both classical and improvised genres. She is the founder and director of the concert series Meet the Composer, focused on an in-depth exploration of one composer per performance, and Among Friends, a mixed media concert series dedicated to combining visual and musical mediums in performance. She has served as the co-director of the Musical Arts Program with the Sounds of Lyons in Lyons, CO (SOL MAP) and Arts Evolution and BenFeng Music Festival throughout Taiwan. Her first collaborative album of original compositions was created and recorded in Cabris, France with musicians from France, England, and Colorado is due to be released in the fall.
A proponent of integrative education, Emma is the co-founder and director of the Colorado based non-profit Integral Steps, which strives to bring integrative education and balanced development to individuals, families, and communities through music, movement, psychotherapy, ecology and creative arts. She currently serves as the Dalcroze Musicianship Teacher and Band Instructor in Boulder, CO at the Shining Mountain Waldorf School. She teaches Skype/FaceTime and private lessons from Boston to Boulder and beyond and serves as the coordinator for new programming and an instructor with the Dalcroze School of the Rockies.
As a Dalcroze and Suzuki educator, Emma has appeared as the guest artist for the Utah Flute Association’s annual Flute Day and has given masterclasses and workshops for San Jose State University, University of Texas-Brownsville, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and CU Pueblo. She serves of faculty at the University of Whitewater Wisconsin Flute Camp, and at the Colorado, Las Vegas, Lake Sylvia, and Peaks to Plains Suzuki Institutes.
She is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy where she studied music, creative writing, and photography. Her teachers include legendary pedagogue and flutist, Robert Willoughby, Christina Jennings, Marco Granados, and master Dalcroze educator Lisa Parker. She served as the assistant at the Pender Island Flute Retreat with William (Wibb) Bennett and Lorna McGhee for seven years, and credits much of her outlook on flute and music life to her time spent there each summer. She also received her BA in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and continues to be active in research around mammals and the effects of climate change on the Rocky Mountain Region.
