Malla Vivolin is a flutist, pedagogue and an occasional columnist based in Tampere, Finland. She's particularly fond of the extended techniques as well as performing on different doubling instruments.
As the flutist for Grammy award winning (2024) Uusinta Ensemble she's collect quite a list of flutes to date, ranging from the bass flute and piccolo to various electrical cords. She has gained a Licentiate degree in Artistic research from her alma mater University of Arts's Sibelius Academy, with the artistic part of the degree graded "with distinction", and is currently continuing the pursuit of a doctorate. In her thesis she examines the flute's extended techniques from a narrativistic point of view.
Vivolin has held the co-principal flute chair in Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra since 2016 and is currently a faculty member at the Tampere Universities School of Applied Science's Music Department teaching flute majors and coaching the orchestral academy.
Malla has performed in numerous festivals and venues throughout Europe and in the US and Japan as a soloist and as an ensemble musician, and has presented her artistic research in several conferences, such as the Doctors in Performance Festival in London in 2023.
Over the years Malla Vivolin has received generous support for her projects and studies from Finnish Cultural Foundation, Kordelin Foundation, Pro Musica, Wihuri foundation, Taike and Martin Wegelius Trust and many others.
