Jürgen Franz is the professor for flute at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Hamburg and a member of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg.

He grew up in Rödermark near Frankfurt am Main. As a pre-student he studied at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt and then began his studies at the Frankfurt Musik Hochschule. After the pre-diploma, Jürgen Franz moved to the Musik Hochschule in Stuttgart to study with Jean-Claude Gérard. Further studies led Jürgen Franz to Maxence Larrieu in Geneva and to James Galway in Lucerne.

Jürgen Franz began his orchestral career as a member of the Bielefeld Philharmonic. He then took up the position of first flutist with the Stuttgart Philharmonic and since August 2000 Jürgen Franz has been a member of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg. In addition to guest performances with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and many others, Jürgen has regularly played as solo flutist with the orchestra of La Scala in Milan. He was a member of the orchestra at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival and was invited by Lorin Maazel to play as solo flutist in the "Symphonica Toscanini" orchestra.

Radio and CD productions as well as numerous solo concerts have taken him to France, America, Japan, China, Hungary, Estonia and Switzerland.

Solo CD releases, such as "Flute Trios from France", "European Recital" and "Sonatas by J. M. Leclair" with Maxence Larrieu, have been released on the Tyxart and Chant de Linos labels. His latest album "The Poetic Flute" can be heard on all streaming platforms.

As an editor, Jürgen has arranged works for flute and piano, including works by Debussy, Wagner and Brahms. He has also made his own fantasies for flute and piano on Puccini’s operas "La Bohème" and "Turandot" which have quickly become popular works in the flute repertoire.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Jürgen Franz performs at internationally renowned music and flute festivals, he is also in demand as a jury member at international competitions. His passion as a teacher led him to numerous master classes in Germany and around the world.
