Called “elegant and exacting” (the Boston Globe) and “enterprising” (the New Yorker) Michael Avitabile (he/him) is a flutist, educator, and entrepreneur dedicated to the music of our time. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Hub New Music, an internationally touring quartet of flute, clarinet, violin, and cello that champions a fresh and culturally relevant body of new chamber music.

In his work with Hub New Music, Avitabile has expanded the chamber music repertoire for the flute with over 25 commissions by today’s celebrated composers, including Andrew Norman, Tyshawn Sorey, Angélica Negrón, Nico Muhly, Carlos Simon, Jessica Meyer, Christopher Cerrone, and several others. Recent and upcoming performances include those at the Kennedy Center, Celebrity Series of Boston, King’s Place (London), Morgan Library, Suntory Hall (Tokyo), Soka Performing Arts Center, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

In 2022, Hub New Music’s album Requiem for the Enslaved (Decca Classics) with Carlos Simon was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. The ensemble’s debut record Soul House (New Amsterdam) with composer Robert Honstein was called “ingenious and unequivocally gorgeous” by the Boston Globe. Outside of Hub, Avitabile has worked with notable composers such as Harrison Birtwistle and Christian Wolfe, and will premiere a new sonata by Robert Honstein in summer 2023.

Avitabile was recently awarded the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance Emerging Artist Award, awarded to one alumnus annually. While a student at the New England Conservatory, he was awarded the John Cage Award for Outstanding Contributions to Contemporary Music. His mentors have included Amy Porter, Paula Robison, Marianne Gedigian, and Elizabeth Rowe. In his free time, he enjoys baking, yoga, bike riding, and exploring coffee shops across the globe.
