Born in Guimarães (Portugal), Rute Fernandes is Co-Principal Solo Flute at the Philharmonia Zürich and the Zurich Opera House Orchestra.

Rute studied at the Professional and Artistic School of the Vale do Ave (Artave) with Joaquina Mota and Elisa Trigo. As a scholarship holder of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Rute completed her degree at the Haute École de Musique de Genève with Michel Bellavance and Serge Saitta (baroque flute) and a Master’s Degree in Orchestra at the Hochschule Luzern – Musik with Sarah Rumer and Nicola Mazzanti (piccolo) with maximum distinction and has had the benefit and privilege to have taken masterclasses with Emmanuel Pahud, Barthold Kuijken, Denis Bouriakov, Sarah Rumer, Riccardo Ghiani, Felix Renggli, Vincent Cotvrint.

During her career as a soloist, in addition to performing internationally, she was awarded at several competitions such as the 1st Prize at 53rd Internationaler Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen, Edwin-Fischer Preis Wettbewerb, Concours National d’Éxecution Musical de Riddes (Switzerland), International Flute Competition Jastrzebie-Zdrój in Poland, the 3rd National Contest for Winds of La Salette (Portugal), and the Honorific Prize David Russell(Spain), among others.

A passionate and active chamber musician, Rute is a member of the ensemble ‘Made in Trio’ with David Dias da Silva (clarinet) and Sinforosa Petralia (piano). The trio is a prizewinner of the Chieri International Chamber Music Competition 2017, Marianne und Curt Dienemann Stiftung 2015, the Orpheus Chamber Music Competition 2015 and finalists at the Concert Artist Guild Competition 2016 in New York. The trio have also been showcased at the Klang-Basel Festival, the Swiss Foundation for Young Musicians, the Mimiko Konzerte, the Swiss Chamber Music Festival Adelboden (Switzerland), the International Music Festival Primavera (Portugal), the Amici della Musica Trapani and Amici della Musica Alcamo Festival (Italy) and concerts at the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur in Montréal and Gallery 345 in Toronto.

As an orchestral player, befroe taking up her position in Zurich, Rute has performed as solo flutist with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Schweizer-Jugend-Sinfonie Orchester, the European Union Youth Orchestra (Summer School) and as a substitute the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Sinfonieorchester Basel and the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich.
